Hi Dianne, Bob and families. I hope I'm not too late with this but was thinking about you all as you said Goodbye to Joe today. Although I haven't been around recently I just wanted you to know How much I liked and admired both of your parents. The first time I met them I had never been to "the Valley" before and could not believe how welcoming everyone was. Over the years I was fortunate to visit quite often with Joe and Madge and they always made me feel like part of the family...When they were around the room was always filled with music and laughter and so how could you not love them. I will always treasure my memories of them and hope you know how special they were. Sending you all warm thoughts and prayers. Lisa (Quilty) Levstik.

I was a 14 yr old kid when I moved next door to Joe - from what I recall he had just retired and was nearly finished building the log home we all know and loved from the logs of the barns from the farm his family left when he was 6yrs old. – My father worked, there was no mother, so I took to wandering down the road to see what Joe was up to - I often timed it around lunchtime and Madge would throw down a plate and tell me to eat a sandwich with them hehe. I was from the city and a pretty bright shade of green so I found anything Joe was up to, novel and very interesting. He was always on his tractor dragging something somewhere, and he had a lot of naps. (I think maybe that was so I’d get lost ;) Anyway before long he was taking me on the road to the Fiddle Jamborees, I’d help him wire everything up before the do and take it all down after it was over. Was great fun and I made a little money (to buy fishing lures and ammo, of-course). Now Joe had 400 acres, which depending on the beaver situation, could be a decent piece of hunting ground, or a lake. So he decided he would put this kid to good use, and soon was teaching me how to set a conibear trap, anybody knows what these are, knows that these are as dangerous a piece of spring loaded contraption as ever existed. Thankfully we survived the odd one jumping up in the air at us and before you know it we were chainsawing slices of ice in beaver channels, sliding in these traps and keeping the beaver population in good order, plus I’d bring in $80 on a good pelt. Couldn’t make that from a paper route in Ottawa! I really enjoyed all this time spent with Joe, I got to know him when he was happy, grumpy, and even downright ornery. He taught me a lot and I learned even more.
Some of my fondest memories of those days were after a long day’s hunt, our little hunting party following Joe home on the tractor, half frozen and tired from either walking or sitting up at bear claw most of the day, we’d peel our layers of and all of us sit in front of Joe’s big stone fireplace, recounting the stories of the day, who’d missed what buck and for what reason . . . Then Madge or Dianne would call us upstairs for what was for our starved bellies an absolute feast, it would be six-paille, or chilli or chicken, Joe would bring out the Irish Mist and we’d stuff ourselves. Then back to fireside, Madge would get on the piano, and Joe would pull out his fiddle and, well, truly, it just doesn’t get any better than that. Simple good times. The next morning it was up at 4am and repeat. Eventually somebody’d get a deer and then it was even better, cause then we felt we deserved it lol.
When I eventually left Ashdad, as all young folk should, Joe was always never too far away - a birthday phone call was enough to get caught up on the beaver troubles and to make plans to come visit with my daughters as they were born. No one probably knows that Joe actually even helped me buy my first house . . .
I’ll never forget Joe and Madge, she was the sweetest kindest funny, true lady, I loved her, and in all my years I’ve never met anyone who was a better example of how to be a man. I am so lucky and grateful to have had him be part of my life, at the time it mattered most.
Night uncle Joe . . .

Dear Diane, Bob & Quilty Families,
Please accept our sincere heartfelt condolences on the passing of a very Special Man. We are proud and privileged to have called Joe and Madge our friends. They welcomed us into their home on Sunday afternoons to practice music and our step dance routines; the musicians and dancers downstairs while Mike was upstairs sampling Madge's delicious baking. We have fond memories of our time with the Renfrew County Fiddlers, sad that so many have left us yet proud to have been a part of the founding members. We still have the article that Joe wrote about us on our wedding day as well as all the photos of Joe playing for the dancers at my dance recitals in Calabogie. He was always so proud of our accomplishments and was never afraid to tell us. He was a very kind, generous, gifted, dedicated, hard working "gentleman" and was very fortunate to have Madge working "quietly" by his side. Although our paths did not cross as often in the later years, both Joe and Madge would always take the time for a chat to ask about our children and Joe would always say "got your dancing shoes with you Debbie?". We know he will be missed by many but it gives our heart a smile to know that he is once again with his beloved Madge. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time. Love and God Bless ~ Debbie & Mike Sul

One of my happiest and most cherished memories took place on May 8, 2019 when Joe and the late Eileen Brydges raised a glass to celebrate their birthdays on that day. Eileen was celebrating her 101st year and Joe turned 102. This photo graced the front page of The Eganville Leader and we received thousands of well wishes when it was posted on our Facebook site. I think I speak for thousands of our readers when we express our condolences to Joe’s family and friends on his passing.

Dear Diane, Bob and Quilty Families:
My sincere condolences to you all on the passing of Joe. Joe was the first fiddler that I ever Step Danced for back in 1971.
It was at the Renfrew legion and my step dance teacher at that time was Mr. Larry Proulx of Renfrew. In later years when I got into music, I played many times with Joe at different venues on the Quebec and Ontario sides.
Joe and the late George Taylor played for my step dance recital in Bryson in the early 90's.
Back in the early 80's Joe hosted a weekly radio show from Renfrew Ont. and the band I was with at that time was the BrysonAires.
Our band and I were honored to be guests on his show many times. He was a natural on radio, as MC with always a quick wit and a good story.
Madge was always at his side. What a lovely lady.
They were an amazing couple.
In later years I got to see Joe and play music for him and the seniors at the annual St,Patricks show every year at Groves
I am honored to play for Joe once again at the church and funeral this coming Monday.
You have earned your eternal rest Joe and you are now back together with Madge.
Rest in Peace, my friend

Hi Diane and all family members, what incredible, amazing lives both of your parents lived on this earth and how much they made the world an enjoyable and better place. I was so privileged to know them both. Let us all be so proud to reach up and grab that torch that your Dad(and previously your Mom) is passing on to us, namely that torch of hard work, and grit and determination and goodness and decency. We are rather sad now that another great light has gone out in this world but we are so happy we had them both on this earth as long as we did. Sincere best wishes to you all.

Thanks, cousins. Dad spoke of you and Bobbie many, many times... the 2 beautiful blond "girls". Sometimes he didn't remember how you were related to him, but when I mentioned Desi, he always remembered and smiled. Thanks for sending him a card and photos for his 103rd birthday. It was a "panasonic" birthday.
