Obituary of Charles Gordon MacKenzie

Charles Gordon MacKenzie (Gord), 85, peacefully passed away on July 18, 2024, at Almonte General Hospital. He was the beloved husband of the late Darlene (Keais). Born in Springhill, Nova Scotia, the only son of the late Lieutenant Donald MacKenzie and Mary Gillis (McSavaney) & step-father Joe Gillis. Gordon is fondly remembered by several cousins in Nova Scotia and Ontario, as well as the Keais family.

His father was posthumously awarded the prestigious Military Cross for bravery during World War II, and Gordon proudly followed in his footsteps by pursuing a career in the armed forces. His military service included roles as a Paratrooper in the Airborne Unit and as a Lineman. Gordon retired as a Warrant Officer from the Royal Canadian Signal Corps.

After retiring from the military, Gordon and Darlene settled in Calabogie. Darlene pursued her passion as a ski instructor while Gordon enjoyed tending to their chalet and garden while listening to his favourite music. His deep affection for animals, particularly dogs and cats, was a constant source of joy throughout his life.

In recent years, Gordon resided at Orchard View Gardens in Almonte due to declining health. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff of the Medical-Surgical unit at Almonte General Hospital and the 4th floor at Orchard View Gardens, as well as to Dr. Ray and Dr. Turcotte. Special recognition is also extended to Jim & Shirley McSavaney, Sandy Southwick and Jeanne St Louis for their continued care, support and companionship.

Gordon's legacy of service, generous nature, and dry sense of humour will be remembered by all who knew him.

In accordance with Gordon's wishes, there will be no service. Following cremation, his ashes will be scattered in a serene wooded area. Donations in his memory can be made to Crohn's and Colitis Canada or a charity of choice.
