Obituary of Fredrick "Fred" Donald Runge

It is with very heavy hearts that family announces that Fred passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his family on Wednesday November 13, 2024 at the age of 73. Loving husband of Barbara Smith for 45 years. Dear father of Graham, and Alec (Richelle d’Entremont). Proud Grandpa of Hudson, Maxwell, and George. He was predeceased by his parents Donald and Patricia (nee Dennis) Runge. He is survived by siblings Judy Biggs, Dennis (Hazel), Susan (Peter Dowler), and Donnie (Donna Harris); as well as a sister in law and brother in law; many nieces and nephews.

Fred was born in Ottawa, Ontario, the fourth of five children. Despite receiving a BES Honours in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Waterloo, Fred decided to follow his father’s footsteps in the print industry and accepted an offer to head The Renfrew Mercury in 1978 at the age of 27. Fred’s laid back managerial style and charismatic personality helped shepherd the paper into the digital age, building the business into a modern, thriving, award winning publisher. Well after his retirement in 2007, Fred could still be seen cherishing the feel and smell of an old school newspaper.

Fred immersed himself in post-retirement life with the same drive and enthusiasm he held throughout his career. The ski hill, golf course, and cottage became his new office. His humour and warmth was shared with family and friends over cold beer during apres-skis, or a glass of wine during late mid-summer cottage nights. He was most at peace watching the sunrise over the lake, cup of coffee in hand.

Many thanks to the caring staff at Renfrew Victoria Hospital, and Hospice Renfrew. The family wishes to thank Fred’s niece, Jennifer Biggs, for all her care and support during Fred’s illness. Private family services will be held at the Goulet Funeral Home. In his memory, donations may be made to Hospice Renfrew.

He will be missed by all who knew him.
