It is a challenge to find words to express my heart felt sympathy for Sister Joan's family and many friends. She gave her life to God, to music and to the children of our nation. Her gift of music will live on in all of those she taught. There can be no better way to express our love for Sister Joan and for God, than to sing a song of praise.

Sr. Joan of Arc taught us at St. Joseph's Intermediate in Ottawa from 1959 to 1961. We were delighted to have her teach us both years, as she was full of fun and life. Along with the regular curriculum, she taught us some basic music theory, and lots of lively songs, which we still sing around campfires, to this day. .. "Rule Britannia" and "O Sacrum Convivium" (in two-part harmony) among them! She taught us correct grammar, so that I remember in high school feeling that I had a stronger foundation in written English than many of my classmates. The folk dances we learned are still something I can do! When I retired and returned to Eastern Ontario, another friend and I had planned to go to Renfrew to visit Sr. Margaret Joan. I regret that we never did it. Filling in the intervening years with her would have been fun. I wish I'd let her know how much she had meant to me. I am glad that she was surrounded, in her last days, by many people who appreciated and loved her.

Sr Joan of Arc, a much-loved teacher in Grades 7 & 8 at St Joseph's in Sandy Hill, Ottawa, in 1959-61, was a huge influence in my life.
She instilled in us a love of reading when, after lunch, she would read from some very exciting book.
She directed our girls choir. I have fond memories of singing at Mass at St Joseph's, entering the Ottawa Music Festival where we won many awards, and even singing on CJOH TV. Travelling to these events, Sr Joan would have lemon slices for us to suck on to improve our voices.
We practised Wednesdays before school and Fridays after supper. Many of us continued in the choir throughout high school, giving up our Friday evenings.
She also taught us folk dances which we performed at school concerts.
To this day, her influence on us is still evident as we sit around the campfire at the cottage, singing many of her folk songs, playing our guitars, and teaching our grandchildren this love of music.
Deepest sympathies, Cathie Corrigan (Vernon) of Barry’s Bay

Sister Joan was my music teacher for 10 years. She cared about her students and realized the importance of music in childrens' lives. So much so that she came out of retirement several times to continue bring music into our lives. She created opportunities for us and we got to perform at festivals and see musicals in Ottawa, which was a huge inspiration to me. She never gave up on me even when I wanted to give up and she took time to listen and offer support when I was going through a difficult time in my early teens. And I'll never forget, she always had a granola bar and juice box when we had extended lessons after school! I felt like one of her children, that's how much she cared about her students. Today, I am performing on stage at a theatre as a career, so much thanks to her inspiration. Even though I cannot be there to say goodbye in person, today I celebrate her life. I will always be so grateful to her. Every song I sing on stage is for you, Sister Joan. Thank you.

On behalf of the staff and students of St. Thomas the Apostle School, sincere thanks to Sister Joan for sharing her gift of music with us.
Sister Joan was our volunteer music teacher. She was generous with her time and taught countless classes and individuals to sing and play instruments. She challenged us to try our best and celebrated with us when we reached a high level of performance. Her legacy is in our voices and our appreciation of music, of song and choral speaking. We became harmonious under Sister's guidance! Her impact on the STA community is immeasurable. Blessings to you, Sister Joan.

It does take a village to raise a child. The passing of Sister Joan takes me back to the recesses of time. That's were Sister Joan came in along with many other villagers. Sister Joan taught me music, faith, and discipline while attending Saint Thomas the Apostle Elementary School in Renfrew Ontario. Myself along with other youth were part of her Children's Youth Choir. Naturally you would expect that we were drilled in such art but what many didn't realize was our regular visits to the Renfrew Manor for the elderly. She didn't just teach us music. She taught us compassion! Our voices brought joy to many people who were on there last few steps in life's path. Sister Mary Joan Thank You for being one of the many role models to step in and guide me. To show me what faith in our Lord can bring....joy.

My heart goes out to you and your family, Sister Joan touched the lives of many people around her, those of us who had the privilege to sing in her choirs will always be grateful for her guidance and help discovering the joys of music. As I am away in University I cannot make it to the wake or funeral, I hope both services reflect just how much she was loved throughout the community.

One of my earliest elementary school memories is auditioning for Sister Joan's choir. 20 years later my sister and I can still recite some of the songs she taught us. She brought music into the life of so many and I am positive she has left happy memories with more people than you could imagine.

I am so saddened to learn of Sister Joan's passing. She was a massive pillar of my childhood. As her student I was rebellious to a point... I had a difficult childhood. Sister Joan gave me something... Something I never knew til now. I've always had a love for music.. And she taught me why and how to keep it flow in my life when I needed most. She had a great impact. I don't think I'd be where I am without that love in my life. Rest in Peace Sister Joan. May God KEEP YOU AND LOVE YOU FOREVER ....
