I have been wanting to write in here for quite some time. Many years ago, I had a doberman who passed away in my arms one night. I was working afternoon shift on Elgin street when Jan came up for something. I spoke to her about my dog passing away and she looked at me and asked me to email a picture of Sasha to her email. A few days later, Jan came back to the desk and presented me with a printout of the poem "Rainbow Bridge" and on that printout, there was the picture of my dog standing on the bridge. I was very touched by what Jan did for me. I took that printout and had it laminated on a piece of wood. It now hangs in my living room.

Jan will remain a treasured mentor and friend. She was a pioneer in policing, and one whose memory will endure as a one-of-a-kind character with strong opinions, and stronger language. She shared many inspiring stories of her law enforcement journey, her challenges and her successes. I was so impressed with her Women's Auxiliary Division experiences that she became the subject in an article on the History of Women in Policing. (...couldn't quote her though, without numerous discretionary warnings)
Her wry smile, great wit and unending support are the things I will miss the most.
Rest well now, Jan. You have left a legacy that will last many lifetimes.

Jan was a dedicated employee who enjoyed her printing position within the adminstration division. Whenever budgets permitted she would come looking for a new piece of equipment to make her job easier and nine out of ten times we found monies for some of her wish list requests. (Having performed some printing tasks earlier in my career as a police cadet I had a soft spot for the position). Once this new equipment was in place Jan would eventually show up in my office to proudly show off the results. One of which was a binding machine that made notebook type books. I am still using one of these writing books she made for me some 25 yrs. later. This is in itself is testamount to her skill! Whenever I would drop by her office to chat the inevitable 'cookie tin' would disappear and there was a lingering smell left in the air. She would immediately show me something new to distract me from 'the smell'. Jan would bend over backwards to assist in any printing task requested of her. My sincere condolences to her friends and family.

My deepest condolences on Jan`s passing. She was an Ottawa Police icon and one of our greatest characters. In the age before computers, Jan in the print shop was the most powerful person in the police service. She had a clothesline where she would clip your print request. Generally she applied the `first come first served` system, but if someone wanted a job done right away, she would move that to the front provided that she liked you and you treated her with respect. Any disrespect would result in your job being relegated to the very end of the line. I got along well with Jan because of many things: I truly respected her, she stood her ground and spoke truth to power – something that I have always valued; she was a former uniformed member; and she was exceedingly good at her job.
Rest in peace, Jan. You will always be remembered.
Larry Hill, Retired Ottawa Police Officer.

Heartfelt condolences to Jan's loved ones. She was a treasured friend; honest & true, with a memorable sense of humor. My Mum Dorothy & I both adored her. I know without a doubt that Dorothy was one of the first in line for Jan's Heavenly greeting party. I still have a friendship poem that Jan gave to her years ago when she needed uplifting. This planet could sure use more souls like Jan Dumais.
God bless each of you. You are in my prayers.

Jan was the printer when I joined Ottawa Police in 1979. I was one of the first four women they hired under the new hiring rules. Jan and a few other ladies were the "old" regime. It was my pleasure to get to know Jan through the years. I spent many hours in the printing room with Jan drinking coffee and talking about the old days and all of the issues women had in policing at that time. She was an inspiration and a mentor. Jan you will be sadly missed. My sincere condolences go out to family and friends.
