Mr. Lorente was one of those people that you can't help but remember for the rest of your life. I only had him for one class: "Ancient History" in grade 11, but he was such a part of RCI's history himself. He was just as enthusiastic about allowing me to share my copy of "History Gone MAD" in class as he was about ensuring that we correctly understood the proper pronunciation of Greek names and places. And he was so omnipresent in the school as a whole. I never participated in any of his overseas trips, but I found myself recalling things that we had covered in class when, 13 years later, I travelled with my wife in Europe. To Dave: Congrats on a life well lived. To his family: My condolences. I'm sure you are proud of him.

To the entire Lorente family:
Mr Lorente was an amazing man ... in a league of his own. I have fond memories of him from throughout my childhood. He was so kind, gentle, intelligent, interesting, well-spoken, and had a GREAT sense of humour. I will never forget his beautiful smile and the twinkle in his eyes! He was definitely one-of-a-kind, a true gem who accomplished so much during his life and who has had an immeasurable impact on so many former RCI students, as well as friends and neighbours. A huge loss for his family, friends, and the community. What a legacy your husband/dad/grandfather leaves - both in accomplishments and in his children and grandchildren! Please accept my deepest sympathies for your loss. Hugs to you all.

On behalf of the Pavezka family, my condolences to the Lorente family on Dave's passing.
He was a wonderful man. I had him for one year as a history teacher at RCI...remembered his stories and experiences he shared with his lessons. I also remembered him convincing students to join the army cadets in 1967 by dangling the 'prize' of a trip to Expo67 in Montreal..
Dave and my mother Mary both taught at the same time at RCI, and were always good friends (helped I am sure by the fact she was British), even in retirement. Dave would often show up to events like mom's birthday parties, where I would have a chance to once again listen to his stories.
Thanks Dave!
RIP

Dave gave so much to so many. He happily, tirelessly did everything with dedication, an open mind and an open heart.
He was an absolute fountain of knowledge: I saved an email from him a few years ago in which he signed off and explained (of course!) the Greek word “agape” (ah-GAH-pay: unconditional spiritual love. Of course.)
Deepest condolences to Kay and all the family in the loss of this wonderful, beloved man.
Agape forever dear Mr. Lorente, you changed my life.

To our children Dave was known as Grandpa. He would share his knowledge with his children and grandchildren whenever he visited and often they would consult him on school projects or other subjects. I often thought over the years that Dave would have to live several lifetimes to be able to share all of his knowledge or complete all the projects he would so willingly and passionately take on. It is heartwarming to see how many lives he touched as evidenced in all the beautiful posts displayed on these pages. As a family we would like to share that "Grandpa" will be missed tremendously. We had him longer than many have their parents and leave as his legacy all we can teach to our children and in turn what they then teach theirs. Family is the most important legacy of all and in witnessing how all of Dave's family came together to support Dave in his final days, all the love they showed for Kay and all they gave to each other is the evidence of all Dave taught to his family and is the most important gift we can give as human beings . Rest in Peace Grandpa and watch over us always!

I'm so very sorry to learn of Dave's passing. He was a terrific man. He & Kay arranged to speak years ago at a Quebec Family History Society conference at McGill University. It was so fascinating & went long overtime. Dave told of the plight of the home children here in Canada, while 2 reps from England spoke to us about the "likely" fate of these same children had they stayed in England. One of the reps was Joan Foster from Northumberland who had written a book "Our Bairns" describing the efforts to teach the home children some farming skills etc before they came to Canada. Later Dave & Kay took Joan to Renfrew to meet a home child (quite elderly as I recall) who was born in Northumberland England. -- My most sincere condolences Kay, to you & your family. Dave certainly lives on in our hearts.

His contribution made an enormous impact, not just for descendants, but for Home Children themselves. Today, we only have two British Home Children surviving, we honour and cherish them. My condolences to the Lorente family.
I met Dave on many occasions in my quest for information on Home Children. As the founder of “Home Children Canada” he was instrumental in identifying and spreading the Home Children story. Without his dedication to the task, many in Canada would not know of this important part of our Canadian History. Thank you Dave.
